BANGOR – The state’s first “Food Mobile Program” will kick off at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 22, in the parking lot at Sam’s Club in Bangor.
With high fuel and grocery prices, officials at the Good Shepherd Food Bank in Brewer are anticipating a greater need than usual this year.
The public is invited to attend the “Fill the Food Mobile for the Holidays” event Tuesday. All food collected will be brought to Good Shepherd’s Brewer distribution center, which helps serve more than 100 agencies in the region. As part of the effort, Sam’s Club will give day-pass vouchers free to anyone who wants to shop at the store that day.
The public is asked to donate canned goods and nonperishables. Other needed items include turkeys, hams, chicken, fresh potatoes, apples and fruit, squash, carrots, canned meats, tuna, instant potatoes, peanut butter, macaroni and cheese and paper products.
The new food truck is actually a reconditioned beer truck donated by Federal Distributors. It can haul 10,000 pounds of food and will be used by the food bank to distribute food to Maine’s neediest families in the most remote areas of the state.
A special ribbon-cutting will begin at 11 a.m. with Gov. John Baldacci on hand.
