Atlantic Salmon Federation

BANGOR – Richard J. Warren of Bangor, publisher of the Bangor Daily News, conservationist, philanthropist, community volunteer and longtime director on the Atlantic Salmon Federation’s board, will take over the reins of the organization’s board of directors. After 13 years in the top driver’s seat and 26 years on the board, U.S. Chairman Donal O’Brien of New Canaan, Conn., has decided to retire.

The organization works to influence public policy on a river-by-river, state-by-state, province-by-province basis in the United States and Canada. It raises the public’s awareness and concern about the salmon’s plight.

ASF has a network of seven regional councils – New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, Maine and Western New England – with a membership of more than 150 river associations and 40,000 volunteers. The regional councils cover the freshwater range of the Atlantic salmon in Canada and the United States.

Boulder Bash

ORONO – The University of Maine’s MaineBound Adventure Center will hold its fourth annual Boulder Bash at 9 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 3, at the center. The cost for UMaine students before Wednesday, Nov. 30, is $12, $15 for others. The cost after Nov. 30 is $20 for everyone. A T-shirt is included in the cost. Paul Bunyan Marathon

BANGOR – Phil LeBreton and organizers of the Paul Bunyan Marathon announced the latest additions to its sponsor team. They are: LOCO Footwear, Rodale Inc., Runner’s World, Dunkin Donuts, Finish Line, Black Bear Inn, Best Inn, Dirigo Search and Rescue, Crow Athletics, MDI Marathon, Orono Parks and Recreation, MarathonGuide.com and Maine Track Club.

With eight months still to go before the return of the Paul Bunyan Marathon, the event is off and running, LeBreton said.

With the help of MDI Marathon director Gary Allen and MarathonGuide.com, the event now has a newly designed Web site, www.paulbunyanmarathon.com. Allen donated the domain address for the Web site as a token of his support. MarathonGuide.com donated Web site design services and will be the host online supplier.

Due to a redesign of the course, the proposed 10k race has changed to a 15k event. Ray Hintz will handle the first steps into USA Track and Field sanction by measuring the course with global surveying tools. USA Track and Field wheel measurements also will be submitted for official certification.

Under Mike, St. Laurent’s leadership, LOCO Footwear will put thousands of dollars of athletic gear into the community and make awards of footwear and certificates.

The 2006 marathon and the 15k event will be USA Track and Field-certified and sanctioned.

A children’s “marathon” is in the works and will include an obstacle course that children may participate in at Cameron Stadium, Garland Street, Bangor. This event is awaiting final approval.

Orono Parks and Recreation has offered its recreation facility for monthly meetings for board members on Thursdays, starting in December.

The pre-race pasta dinner will be held at Momma Baldacci’s Italian Restaurant in Bangor. The president of the Maine Hall of Fame, Peter Millard, and Dave Wilson have shown interest in helping with guest speakers.

Alumni Bunyan runners may enter the marathon free of charge. Members of Maine Running clubs along with the 50 State Club Team and the Marathon Maniacs will receive two free passes to the pre-race pasta dinner.
