WOOLWICH – A Thanksgiving Day collision that closed U.S. 1 for more than three hours claimed the lives of a couple from Pembroke, Mass.

William Sherman, 62, was dead at the scene and his wife, Muriel, 59, died en route to a hospital.

Muriel Sherman was driving north when her car fishtailed out of control in snow and slush as it was passing another vehicle and then crashed head-on into a southbound car, the Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Department said. The two people in the other vehicle were not seriously injured.

Foul weather and messy road conditions were also blamed for a fatal accident Thursday in Sanford. Mark Kozloff, 51, of North Berwick died of internal injuries after his truck collided head-on with a sport utility vehicle. The driver of the other vehicle was uninjured.
