Bangor man in jail charged with bigamy

A Bangor man already in jail was issued a summons Tuesday alleging that for six years until April of this year, he was married to two women at the same time.

The wife of Efrain Santos Jr., 28, reported at about 10 a.m. to Bangor police that her husband was married to another woman. She presented documentation of her marriage to Santos, along with a Connecticut marriage license that showed another woman as his wife, according to police.

Santos reportedly married his first wife in September 1997 and then married his current wife in April 1999 without getting a divorce, Officer Kevin McLaren wrote in his police report.

The man finally filed for divorce from his first wife, but that was after he already had been married to both women for more than six years. Under the statute of limitations, the man still can be charged with bigamy, according to police.

Santos’ current wife alerted police Tuesday because she said her husband was physically and mentally abusive toward her.

He already was at Penobscot County Jail on a charge of domestic-related criminal threatening.

Police arrested a Bangor man Monday evening who was hiding at a residence on Fruit Street because his bail conditions stipulated he was not supposed to be there.

Family members of James Paul Pullen, 42, of Bangor called police around 9 p.m. When an officer arrived, Pullen ran from a window and hid in the basement, according to a police report.

He was found by Officer Jason Stuart, who arrested Pullen for violating conditions of release. The man told the officer he was simply bringing his children food.

After Pullen was taken to jail, police tested his blood alcohol level at 0.17, even though the man was not supposed to be drinking.

Pullen was on probation for an incident in October in which he reportedly assaulted his longtime girlfriend in the presence of the couple’s two daughters.
