DOVER-FOXCROFT – Charges continue to mount against a local man who was accused of cruelty to animals after authorities seized 92 dogs in April from a home he shared with his parents and from a kennel on the property.

Mark Hagelin, 45, arrested Monday after eluding police for a week, appeared Tuesday before Justice Joseph Jabar in Piscataquis County Superior Court. Two more counts of violation of bail conditions were added to his pending case.

In addition to bringing the new charges, Piscataquis County District Attorney R. Christopher Almy filed a motion for a hearing to revoke Hagelin’s bail. That hearing is expected to be held Thursday.

Also on Tuesday, another of Haeglin’s court-appointed attorneys, Richard Hartley of Bangor, filed a motion to withdraw from the case.

At least two other attorneys also have withdrawn from his case. It is expected that attorney Randy Day of Garland will be appointed in Hartley’s stead, according to Almy.

Warrants for Hagelin’s arrest were ordered last week by Jabar when the local man failed to make a scheduled Nov. 21 Superior Court appearance on charges stemming from the April seizure of the dogs he co-owned with his parents, Carol and the late Burton Hagelin Sr. Authorities said the dogs were not properly fed or watered.

Burton Hagelin Sr. also was charged with cruelty to animals, but his case was dismissed upon his death last month. No charges were ever filed against Carol Hagelin.

Mark Hagelin, who was thought to be living in the Bangor area last week, eluded police until a search warrant was executed by Dover-Foxcroft police at his mother’s Gray Hill Road home.

There, police found Hagelin hiding in a “cubbyhole” on the second floor of the home, a home where “six or seven” dogs were observed by police during the search.

As part of his original bail conditions on the cruelty to animal charge, Hagelin was ordered not to be near any dogs and he was ordered to report his whereabouts to authorities. Almy said Hagelin has repeatedly violated both of those orders.
