BANGOR – A Clifton man was sentenced on Monday in U.S. District Court to 27 months in prison on drug and gun possession charges. William Sjostrom, 42, also was sentenced to three years of supervised released following his release from prison. U.S. District Judge John Woodcock also ordered Sjostrom to pay a $5,000 fine.

Sjostrom pleaded guilty last month to three counts of possession with intent to distribute OxyContin and one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm. He was prohibited from having guns because he was convicted in 1986 and 1987 in Penobscot County Superior Court of selling drugs.

He faced a maximum of 30 years in prison and a fine of up to $2 million on the drug charges and up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000 on the firearm charge. According to the federal sentencing guidelines, the recommended sentence was between 24 and 30 months.

Sjostrom’s wife, Brenda Sjostrom, 42, pleaded guilty earlier this month to one count of possession with intent to distribute OxyContin. She faces up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $1 million. Her sentencing date has not been set.

The couple were arrested Jan. 2, 2004, in Brewer after agents with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration’s Bangor Task Force and the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency observed them buying drugs in the Marden’s parking lot in Calais. Agents followed them to the Clifton-Brewer town line, where the car was stopped, according to court documents.

Brenda Sjostrom gave police a zip-lock bag that contained 43 OxyContin pills.
