FAIRFIELD – A 55-year-old Fairfield man was killed when struck by a car as he walked across the street Wednesday during heavy rain.

Michael Meader was hit when a motorist swerved to pass a stopped sport utility vehicle on Main Street near the Fairfield-Waterville line, police said. Witnesses say he was carried for several hundred feet on the car’s hood.

Meader was out for his nightly walk with a friend when he was hit, police said. The other pedestrian was not hurt.

Once the investigation is concluded, the findings will be turned over to the district attorney to decide whether charges will be brought against the driver.
