Bangor’s George earns All-America, All-New England honors

BANGOR – Dylan George measures his high school soccer career largely by the relationships he’s forged.

“Being with my team is the biggest thing,” he said, “and all the games we played together, even before Bangor High School because I’ve been playing with them since travel league. It’s a great bunch of guys, and it was a fun high school career for me and my teammates.”

But should George choose to measure his career in a more quantitative fashion, he has the hardware to back it up after sweeping the top boys honors at the 32nd Maine Soccer Coaches Association awards banquet held Sunday at the Spectacular Events Center.

George, a senior striker, was named Class A player of the year for the second straight year, earned All-New England honors and was named the MSCA’s boys All-America representative. Laura Martel, a senior striker from Lewiston, was the girls’ honoree.

A three-year starter for the Rams, George finished as Bangor’s career scoring leader with 52 goals and 21 assists. He had a school single-season record of 26 goals as a junior and scored 23 goals this fall as Bangor reached the Eastern Maine Class A quarterfinals and finished with an 11-2-2 record.

George is the first Bangor High player to earn the All-America designation since Jay Jeffrey in 2000.

“It means a lot,” he said. “I’ve been thinking about this for a long time. I thought it was realistic for me to get this, but I didn’t know if I was going to because there were some great players out there.”

Also a hockey standout at Bangor, George expects to continue his soccer career in college but is leaning toward attending prep school next year.

Senior back Taylor Sabo of Scarborough, senior midfielder Greg Frost of Greely of Cumberland Center and senior goalie Ryan Vermette of Mount Ararat of Topsham joined George as All-New England recognition on the boys side.

Jessie Roberts of Bangor and Katie DeLong of Presque Isle were among four Maine schoolgirl players earning All-New England status. Roberts, a senior midfielder, led Bangor to its first Eastern A championship. She had 13 goals and seven assists during the regular season, then added a goal and two assists in postseason play as the Rams won the regional title before bowing to Gorham in the state final.

DeLong, a senior striker, led Presque Isle to an undefeated regular season and a berth in the regional semifinals to finish with a 15-1 record. DeLong concluded her career with 55 goals.

DeLong and senior striker Nate Carter made it a clean sweep for Presque Isle in the state Class B player of the year category. Carter set school records with 32 goals this season and 74 for his career in leading the Presque Isle boys team to a 16-2 record and its first Eastern Maine Class B title.

Hannah Breton of Greenville was named the state Class D girls player of the year. The junior striker scored 31 goals to lead the Lakers to a 15-2 record and their first Eastern Maine championship since 1995.

Nate Holden of Richmond was the boys Class D player of the year, while George and Martel won in Class A and Harry Hanson and Alex Mack, both of North Yarmouth Academy, were selected in Class C.

Coaches honored included Aaron Wilcox of Bangor Christian, Tom Pickering of Lee Academy and Dan Cyr of Madawaska.

Wilcox and Pickering were nominated for National Soccer Coaches Association of America New England Coach of the Year, Wilcox in the boys private-school division and Pickering in the girls small-school ranks. Wilcox led Bangor Christian to an 18-0 record and the Class D boys state championship, while Pickering guided Lee to an 18-0 mark and the Pandas’ second Class D state title in the last three years.

Cyr was named Eastern Maine girls soccer coach of the year for leading the Owls to their first Eastern Maine Class C title since 1999.
