UMPI wins Star City tourney

At Presque Isle, Jessica Cyr scored 16 points and Liza Maynard added 12 as the University of Maine-Presque Isle topped the University of Maine at Machias 65-52 on Sunday in the championship game of the Star City Tournament.

Sarah Beasley had 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Owls and was named the tournament’s most valuable player.

Sara Wells led UMM with 18 points, while Alyssa Larochelle scored 12 and Angela Qualey added 11.

Unity College won Sunday’s consolation game, defeating UMaine-Augusta 42-31 behind 28 points from Aubrie Barrett. Jenya Nadeau led UMA with 17 points.

In Saturday’s first-round games, Ashley Epright had 23 points and 10 rebounds to lead UMPI past Unity 86-18, while Larochelle scored 25 points to lead UMM to a 72-38 win over UMA.

Beasley was joined on the all-tourney team by Epright, Qualey, Wells, Nadeau and Barrett.

At Waterville, tournament Most Valuable Player Greg Bush hit a 3-pointer with 2:51 remaining to give the Beavers a 55-51 lead and Colby could get no closer than three the rest of the way as Babson won the Colby Invitational Sunday.

Bush had a team-high 14 points to pace a balanced attack.

Drew Cohen had a game-high 18 points for Colby and he also had eight rebounds and six blocked shots. Nick Farrell had 13 points, seven steals and three assists for Colby. Cohen and Farrell were each chosen to the all-tourney team.

Maine, Northeastern split

At Boston, freshman right wing Vanessa Vani’s eighth goal of the season, coming 4:37 into the third period, proved to be the game-winner as Maine beat Northeastern 3-2 Sunday to salvage a split of their weekend Hockey East series at Matthews Arena.

Northeastern rallied for four unanswered third-period goals to erase a 2-0 lead and post a 4-2 victory on Saturday.

On Sunday, Vani’s goal off a Sonia Corriveau assist gave the Bears a 3-1 lead.

Vani’s linemates, Brigitte Laflamme and Corriveau, scored second-period goals to answer Crystal Rochon’s first-period goal for NU.

Ali Bielawski pulled the Huskies within 3-2 with 7:26 left but the Bears hung on.

Lundy Day made 14 saves for the Bears, who are now 9-4-3 overall and 2-4-2 in Hockey East.

Marisa Hourihan had 34 stops for Northeastern, which fell to 4-12-1 and 3-7-1, respectively.

On Saturday, Rochon triggered Northeastern’s four-goal 4:55 into the third period and capped it with an empty-netter.

Corriveau and Kelly Law staked Maine to a 2-0 lead with goals just 1:56 apart early in the third period. Julie Poulin assisted on both.

Hourihan finished with 31 saves while Maine’s Genevieve Turgeon was forced to make just eight stops.
