Michigan’s ‘D’ stifles UMaine Black Bears drop third straight

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The University of Michigan forced 18 Maine turnovers and limited the Black Bears to 38 percent shooting from the field to earn a 68-60 women’s basketball victory at Crisler Arena on Saturday.

The loss was the third straight for Maine, now 2-3 and idle until next Sunday’s game at Mississippi State. Michigan ended a two-game losing streak of its own and improved its record to 3-4.

Ta’Shia Walker led Michigan with 24 points, while Kelly Helvey added 13 points, 13 rebounds and five assists.

Abby Schrader and Bracy Barker each scored 20 points for Maine, with Schrader also grabbing 10 rebounds. Ameshia Bryant added five points and eight rebounds for the Black Bears.

Michigan jumped out to an early 18-6 lead, holding Maine scoreless for one five-minute stretch, and held a 29-15 advantage before Maine used a 15-6 run to close within 35-30 at intermission. Schrader had five points during that run, while Ameshia Bryant scored four points and Brittany Bowen beat the buzzer with a jumper to close out the half.

Three-pointers by Helvey and Carly Benson helped Michigan moved out to a 43-34 lead early in the second half, and the Wolverines stretched that margin to as much as 65-51 late in the game.
