Con man sentenced to 3 years for stealing from women

PORTLAND – A man accused of stealing thousands of dollars after befriending women and winning their trust was sentenced to three years in prison. But that was not enough for at least one of his victims.

John F. Kennedy took something more important than money. He also took Ashley French’s ability to trust people.

“It’s too bad public flogging or other forms of archaic punishment are no longer acceptable,” French said Wednesday.

Kennedy, 37, will spend 12 years on probation after completing his prison term. During that time, he will be required to repay $59,605 to six victims. Other victims not named in the original indictment claim he took another $55,000 from them.

According to court documents, there was a pattern to Kennedy’s crimes.

He would befriend a target and impress her with expensive cars and his stories of a successful career. Then he would claim he needed money because of some sort of mix-up, or a lost wallet, or a medical emergency.

“He played on their trust, sympathy, kindness and compassion,” Deputy District Attorney Meg Elam said. “The only thing he worked hard at for the last 10 years was stealing from others.”

Speaking in Cumberland County Superior Court, Kennedy told the judge that his “gambling addiction” got out of control. “I have hurt a lot of people,” he said. “I know it might not mean much to them now, but I’m sorry.”

Justice Roland Cole ordered consecutive suspended sentences for many of the crimes, creating a situation in which Kennedy will be on probation for 12 years, instead of the usual four.

If he violates the terms of his probation, which includes making weekly payments to his victims, he will face as much as 12 more years in prison.

“He’s a con man, no question,” Cole said. “I’m skeptical, as I’m sure some of the victims are. Time will tell.”

Defense lawyer J.P. DeGrinney said he thinks Kennedy can turn over a new leaf if he can get treatment for his gambling problem. “If he doesn’t get it under control, he’s going to do a lot of time in prison,” DeGrinney said.
