It’s only four nights – I think we’ll survive. Howie Mandel’s new “Deal or No Deal” is a high-stakes version of the internationally popular game show.
It might be a hit overseas, but I can’t imagine it making much of a run in the U.S. Mandel is, well, he’s Howie Mandel. Either you love him or you can’t stand him.
It’s expected to be a big hit for NBC, but I have my doubts.
After watching the preview, it took a little bit to even understand how the game works, but I think I’ve got it.
Contestants answer a selection of multiple-choice questions and the quickest to respond with the correct answer is brought to the podium.
During the second round, the contestant selects one of more than 20 briefcases, and the amount of money the case contains is revealed through a process of elimination.
As each briefcase is selected, the player tries to guess how much money is in his briefcase.
If he guesses correctly, he gets the cash.
Throughout the show, the “bank” offers to buy the contestant’s briefcase. With each offer, the player has to decide whether he wants to make the deal with the bank or not.
While Mandel isn’t the greatest game show host, it’s kind of a rush to watch as people compete for the cash – starting at a penny and going all the way up to $1 million.
Because the game doesn’t require much skill and no alliances are needed, there’s little of the personality or conflict that we’ve grown to love with “The Apprentice,” “Survivor” and “The Amazing Race.”
Overseas, the show is produced in the Netherlands and hosted by Andrew O’Keefe on the Seven Network. It’s been such a big hit that the format now airs in 38 countries, including the Netherlands, Algeria, Argentina, Chile, Israel, Mexico, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Russia, Thailand, Germany, Austria, the United Kingdom, the United States, Tunisia, Romania, Poland and India, according to Wikipedia.com.
“Deal or No Deal” is set to run from 8 to 9 p.m. for four nights, starting Monday, Dec. 19, and ending Dec. 22.
