Today is the day Mainers living in the Washington, D.C., area honor us by honoring all members of the military buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

Through the generosity of Worcester Wreath Co. president Morrill Worcester of Harrington, members of the Maine State Society, led by past president Wayne Hanson (who calls Bangor home), will be placing more than 4,500 balsam fir wreaths on the final resting place of those who fought and died for us.

This wonderful project takes about 21/2 hours to complete.

Special wreaths are also placed by members of the society at the USS Maine Memorial, the Tomb of the Unknowns, Sen. Edmund Muskie’s grave, the Kennedy gravesites, and the graves of those who have died in Iraq.

We thank Worcester, and members of the society, for this special recognition of those who served our country so faithfully and so well.

The public is invited to attend the Lights of Hope tree lighting ceremony at 5:30 p.m. today, outside the Webber West Building on the campus of Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.

Each light represents someone who has been affected by cancer, and the tree symbolizes hope.

During the ceremony, Danny and Carla Lafayette will be honored with CancerCare of Maine’s Community Support Award.

They established the Run for Hope, a continuation of the local Terry Fox Run, raising more than $100,000 to help women in our area affected by cancer.

Also being recognized are “star honorees” Harold Bouchard and his daughter, Christine Bouchard, compliments of Brian Bouchard and H.O. Bouchard, and constellation sponsors Daniel and Tina Rice, in recognition of their fathers, Roy Rice and Daniel Cormier.

Although the holiday season might not be the time you would think of attending a pool party, as Mike Robinson suggested when he called last week, he hopes you will consider doing just that.

Robinson and the Friends of Dakin Pool invite you to attend their inaugural Baldacci Christmas Party from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, at Momma Baldacci’s’ Italian Restaurant, 12 Alden St. in Bangor.

Free hors d’oeuvres, door prizes and music will be offered, and you will be able to view blueprints and plans for improvements to the east side swimming pool, which these folks have been working to keep open.

Admission is free but, during this season of giving, it is hoped attendees will be generous with donations they toss into a wading pool.

Santa Claus and one of his elves will be there; you can participate in a 50/50 raffle and there will be giveaways every half-hour during this family-oriented fundraiser.

You are invited to celebrate the holiday season with the New Renaissance Singers at its “Sing Hallelujah!” concert at 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, at Union Street Brick Church on the corner of Union and Main streets in Bangor.

Directed by Laura Estey and accompanied by Yvonne Drake, wrote member Bill Shook, “we join together with a love and enthusiasm for singing and performing.”

The program includes a Christmas medley, “A-Caroling We Will Go,” as well as “The Holly and Ivy,” the “Coventry Carol,” “Lo How a Rose E’re Blooming,” “Ave Verum,” “Ave Maria,” “Let it Snow” and several selections from Handel’s “Messiah” and Hanukkah music, too.

After the concert, you are invited to join the Singers for refreshments and conversation, and take part in a Silent Auction for a holiday gift basket featuring two tickets for the Bangor Symphony Orchestra, and other items.

There is no admission to attend, but if you wish, the Singers graciously accept donations, and extend thanks to all the sponsors and patrons who help them continue their concert schedule.

On behalf of Hampden Congregational Church, Alice Redmond invites the public to hear “the locally famous a cappella group, IMPROMPTU,” perform in concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday Dec. 17, at the church, 101 Main Road North in Hampden.

Admission is by donation, and light refreshments will be available at intermission.

If you have questions, you can call the church at 862-5248.

Pastor Greg Loveless and members of Willimantic Community Church invite you to enjoy their play and cantata, “The Very First Christmas Gift,” at 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 18, at the church, 2371 Elliotsville Road.

Refreshment will follow the holiday presentation.

If you wish more information about this event, call Pastor Loveless at 997-3304.
