Detectives investigating report of rape in Bangor

Bangor police detectives are investigating a report of a rape earlier this week. Investigators said that it is not considered a random act.

An 18-year-old woman reported the incident of gross sexual assault early Monday morning and since then authorities have been gathering evidence and conducting interviews, Detective Sgt. Chip Hodges said Friday. Those interviews are continuing.

Asked whether the woman knew her attacker or if it was a stranger, Hodges said: “We’re not looking at it as a random act.”

The incident took place in the Griffin Road area. Hodges declined to be more specific on the location in order to protect the identity of the woman.

A passenger in a large pickup truck with a loud muffler that Bangor police stopped for going through a stop sign late Thursday night made furtive movements and after investigating, authorities learned why.

In a bag left where Michael Westmoreland, 25, of Bangor had been sitting in the pickup truck, officers found some marijuana, a marijuana pipe, and nine pills that turned out to be a generic form of the painkiller Vicodin, Bangor police Officer Shawn Green reported.

When pressed by police, who said they would test some of the items for fingerprints, Westmoreland admitted that the alcohol and drugs were his. He was charged with possession of Vicodin, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Mathew Williams, 22, of Bangor wasn’t supposed to have contact with his wife as part of bail conditions from a previous arrest. But according to police reports, in recent days he was seen waiting for a bus with her and arguing with her at Wal-Mart.

Bangor police Detective Brent Beaulieu went to their Garland Street home Thursday and found Williams hiding in a chest freezer in the kitchen, despite his wife’s denial that he was there.

On Friday, Williams was at 3rd District Court in Bangor awaiting his court appearance, when he spoke to his wife through the crack between the wall and door of the court holding cell, reported Officer John Heitmann.

After his court appearance, Williams was returned to the Penobscot County Jail where he was booked again on a charge of bail violation.
