GWU’s defense shuts down UM Bears’ Whittier scores 16 points

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Whitney Allen scored 16 points and grabbed 13 rebounds as George Washington University earned a 57-47 women’s basketball victory over the University of Maine at the Smith Center on Saturday afternoon, sending the Black Bears to their fifth straight defeat.

Trailing by nine points late in the first half and 23-17 at intermission, Maine went on a 9-2 run and took its first lead, 26-25, on a layup by Katie Whittier with 16:25 to play. GW eventually took the lead for good at 32-30 two minutes later on a basket by Kenan Cole and stretched out that margin to as many as 15 points.

Whittier finished with 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the field for Maine, while Ashley Underwood scored 10 points, Bracey Barker scored nine, and Abby Schrader contributed eight points and 11 rebounds.

Maine shot 50 percent from the field (20 of 40), but George Washington had 30 more field goal attempts and forced Maine into 28 turnovers as the Black Bears had a season low in points scored.

GW also outrebounded Maine 40-32.

Sarah-Jo Lawrence came off the bench to score 14 points for George Washington, which won its fourth straight game and is now 5-3 on the season. Jessica Simmonds finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Colonials.

Maine (2-5) returns to action at 5 p.m. Dec. 28, when the Black Bears play Mississippi in the first round of the Hurricane Holiday Classic at Miami, Fla.
