COLERAINE, Minn. – Russell Currier of Stockholm earned his first victory in the trials for World Junior Championships, winning the youth men’s 7.5-kilometer relay-format sprint Monday at the Mount Itasca Biathlon Center.
Currier had no shooting penalties and had a time of 22 minutes, 10 seconds. He is one of nine athletes who qualified for the World Junior Championships, which will be held at the Nordic Heritage Ski Center in Presque Isle Jan. 27-Feb. 3.
Fort Kent’s Newt Rogers, who like Currier skis for the Maine Winter Sports Center team, was sixth with a time of 25:26. Caribou High student Joey Bard was 10th (26:58).
