BANGOR – The handshake line at the end of Wednesday’s swim meet at the Bangor YWCA took a bit longer than normal as the Brewer and Hampden swim teams stopped to hug and chat while congratulating each other on their swims.
The two teams, which swam together for 17 years before splitting for good this season, got together for a pizza dinner last week. But Wednesday night they competed against each other for the first time ever at Aloupis Pool.
The Hampden boys came away with a 93-66 win over Brewer in a meet that featured several close races, while the Brewer girls rolled to a 125-54 victory over the Broncos.
The split happened last June, when the SAD 22 board voted to form a Hampden Academy team rather than continuing to swim with Brewer, which served as a cooperative team when Hampden was too small to be on its own.
But Hampden’s numbers grew and the Broncos decided to form their own squad.
Although winning races and improving times were the primary concern Wednesday, the two teams were clearly happy to be back together, even for just one night.
“Pretty much since last season ended we’ve been looking forward to this meet,” said Brewer senior Keegan Rae, who greeted Hampden’s Josh Ranger with a handshake and friendly shoulder bump during the captain’s meeting.
It was the first dual meet of the season for both teams. Some of the Hampden swimmers wore their Brewer orange caps from last year along with their purple swim suits.
“It’s kind of weird because we’re used to seeing people in practice, but now we’re trying to beat them,” Hampden junior Mike Emery said. “It was weird, but it was fun.”
In the boys meet, Jake Cardello and Ranger powered the Broncos with two individual victories apiece. Cardello won the 200-yard freestyle and the 50 free, while Ranger won the 100 butterfly and the 100 free.
Hampden’s Mike Emery also picked up a win in the 100 breaststroke, edging Brewer’s Andrew Meehan, who beat him in the 200 individual medley.
Emery said he had some extra incentive for the breaststroke. He was leading Meehan after the breaststroke leg of the IM, but fell back in the freestyle, which is the last leg of the event.
“He’s a sprinter, so the 50 free is nothing to him,” said Emery, who said he threw up after the IM. “I was dead by the freestyle. But I guess I got him in the [100] breastrstroke.”
Cardello, Ranger, Emery and Matt Alexander comprised both the winning 200 medley relay and 400 free relay teams.
Brewer’s John Williams won the 500 free and was second in the butterfly.
In the girls meet, Brewer freshman Jessica Hodsdon won two events, the 200 IM and the 500 free. She clocked the fastest time of the evening for the boys and the girls in both events.
Brewer senior Erin Suitter was pleased with her wins in the 100 free and 100 back.
“I almost qualified in the back and I dropped a second on my 100 free,” she said. “It was a good day. I’ve been working a lot on sprints and long distance swims to get my endurance up.”
Suitter and Hodsdon both swam on Witches’ winning medley relay and distance relay teams.
Hampden picked up wins from Tabitha Varney in the 50 free and Erin Doucette in the butterfly.
