Christmas club celebrates 72nd year

The Coldbrook Road Christmas Club, a women’s social group, is about to celebrate its 72nd anniversary. When the club was started by Etta Porter in 1934, all the club members lived on the Coldbrook Road in Hampden and Hermon. Edna Bragg, now 100 years old, was the club’s first member. Porter and Bragg are the two surviving members of the original 14.

Currently, many of the club’s members are daughters and granddaughters of the first members. They are Nancy Flewelling, president of the club, and Sandra Auxier, daughters of Katherine Bryer; Jeanette Wyman and Sylvia McGinley, daughters of Florence Redman; Susan Hall, granddaughter of Edna Bragg; and Eleanor Drew, daughter of Anna Crawford.

The club has two honorary members, Frances Burke and Frances Stratton.

Other club members are Phyllis Hand, Regina Tibbetts, Frances Wilcox and Judy Estes.

The club meets the second Thursday of each month and members take turns entertaining. They go to plays, dinners, play cards and beano. They save money for Christmas and in November they go shopping.

The club has a Special Friend it remembers on birthdays and holidays. The club maintains a benefit fund for flowers or gifts in case a member is ill. The fund also is used to support other activities.
