Three Aroostook County athletes have been named to the U.S. team for the 2006 Youth and Junior World Biathlon Championships.

Russell Currier of Stockholm and Newt Rogers will compete with the junior men, while Hilary McNamee of Fort Fairfield is a member of the youth women’s team. All three biathletes are members of the Maine Winter Sports Center team.

Currier won the youth men’s 7.5-kilometer relay-format sprint Monday in the team trials at the Mount Itasca Biathlon Center in Coleraine, Minn.

The world championships will take place Jan. 30-Feb. 5 at the Nordic Heritage Ski Center in Presque Isle. Athletes from 31 countries are expected to compete.
