Truck driver escapes injury when log flies into window

WESTON – A New Brunswick man escaped serious injury early Friday morning after a freak accident on U.S. Route 1 in Weston.

Maine State Police Sgt. Julie Bergan said the incident occurred at about 7:15 a.m., when Waldo McMannus, 50, of Smyrna was driving a logging truck south on the roadway.

The driver met up with a northbound logging truck driven by 52-year-old Michael Denny of Moose Mountain, New Brunswick.

“Mr. McMannus met up with Mr. Denny, and a log from the McMannus truck came off the vehicle and struck the cab of Denny’s vehicle,” Bergan said.

The sergeant said the log then careened through the driver’s side area of the vehicle and struck Denny in the leg, causing minor injuries.

McMannus, who was driving a truck owned by Bruce Warman of Linneus, was not injured.

Denny was driving a truck owned by B. Bad Boys Trucking, which was also out of New Brunswick.

Neither man required medical assistance, and no charges will be filed.

“Apparently it was a short piece of log that got jammed in there somehow and eventually came out,” Bergan said. “There were straps securing the load. It was just one of those things.”

Trooper Darrin Crane handled the case.
