NEWPORT – A Hartland woman was killed Thursday night when her husband accidentally ran her down at the Irving gas station on Main Street, police said.

The accident occurred at about 8:30 p.m., Newport Police Chief Leonard R. Macdaid said.

He said the couple had just returned from Bangor, where they had dropped off the trailer portion of a tractor-trailer.

At the Irving station, the man let his wife out of the truck’s cab so that she could retrieve her personal vehicle. He thought she was walking behind the tractor, and he pulled ahead, running her over, unaware that she had walked in front of the cab, according to Macdaid.

The couple’s identities were being withheld late Thursday night pending notification of next of kin.
