News in brief BANGOR: WI-FI COMING TO DOWNTOWN

Wireless Internet services, commonly known as WiFi, soon will be available downtown, thanks to an agreement city councilors approved Wednesday night. During a meeting at City Hall, the councilors unanimously voted to grant a license allowing wireless Internet routers to be mounted on Pickering Square parking garage and two city-owned utility poles. The license takes effect Jan. 1. The equipment will be provided by Sephone Internet Solutions, headquartered at 81 Main St., owned by the Downtown Center Management Corp. Access will require an account with Sephone, but councilors said Monday that various downtown merchants likely will provide access through their own accounts. WiFi computers use radio technologies to send and receive data within the range of a base station. City Manager Edward Barrett said the new service will be handy to residents and visitors, who could set up accounts online. The city hopes one day to establish free WiFi service areas in such public places as the waterfront or West Market Square. (Dawn Gagnon, BDN)
