News in brief BANGOR: BALL DROP SET FOR DOWNTOWN

Hundreds are expected to gather tonight in West Market Square for Bangor’s second annual New Year’s Eve ball drop. As of Friday, weather forecasts looked favorable, with temperatures in the teens and only a 30 percent chance of snow. Like last year, the low-budget affair will feature the tossing of a Christmas light-covered ball from the top of Stephen and Milva Smith’s brick building at 26 Main St. Gov. John Baldacci, a Bangor native, has accepted an invitation to drop the ball. Bangor Mayor John Cashwell will serve as his backup. In the hours leading up to the big event, Bangor radio station WKIT will conduct a live broadcast and give away prizes donated by downtown merchants. Also today, the Bangor Public Library will throw a masquerade party with live bands and dancing on every floor, karaoke, face painting, board games and crafts from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. The library event not only will ring in 2006, but also celebrate the library’s 100th year of children’s services.
