News in brief LINCOLN: GOVERNOR TO VISIT LINCOLN, MILLINOCKET MILLS

Gov. John Baldacci will be among the state and local officials visiting Lincoln Paper & Tissue in Lincoln and Katahdin Paper Co. in Millinocket today to see how the mills are doing. State Rep. Rod Carr, R-Lincoln, Lincoln Town Manager Glenn Aho and state Sen. Elizabeth M. Schneider, D-Orono, will meet Baldacci at 10 p.m. in Lincoln before meeting state Rep. Herb Clark, D-Millinocket, at the Katahdin Paper guest house at 11:30 a.m. Schneider will accompany the governor to Millinocket. In October, the Lincoln mill began installing a state-of-the-art $36 million tissue machine. The new machine is part of a plan to double the plant’s tissue-making capacity, add 40 new full-time jobs to the plant’s 354-member, $21 million payroll, and alleviate work-order backlogs on the plant’s two 50-ton capacity tissue machines. Lincoln Paper is the Lincoln Lakes region’s largest employer, while Katahdin Paper is the Katahdin region’s largest, with plants in East Millinocket and Millinocket that employ about 550 workers and manufacture about 1,245 tons of paper daily for high-end calendars and telephone directories.
