Second season of the WB’s ‘Beauty and the Geek’ well worth checking out

The new year will ring in new seasons of some reality shows, and I’ve found one that’s already hooked me with the preview DVD.

If you didn’t watch the first season of “Beauty and the Geek” and you find your brain needing a rest after the holidays, tune in to the WB at 9 p.m. Jan. 12.

In the second season of this social experiment, eight ditzy beauties are paired up with eight painfully geeky guys to try to teach each other about life. The couple who makes the biggest transformation will walk away with $250,000.

While the geeks have a lot to learn about socializing, it’s the women who surprise me the most.

Although they don’t seem too eager to engage in discussions about politics and admit they are intimidated by big books, I was shocked to see them admit that they often feel as insecure as the dorks they’re paired with when it comes to looks.

Sitting at the table, the women share insecurities about their bodies and that they sometimes just smile and look cute to hide the fact that they don’t have anything to add to the conversation.

In the first challenge quiz, one of the women is shown a picture of a Phillips screwdriver. When asked what kind it is, she replied: “There’s types of screwdrivers … I’m going to have to say, hand-held screwdriver.”

That’s mild compared to what happens when the women are asked to give a speech about a variety of intellectual topics in the second episode. It’s interesting to see what happens when they can’t use their looks or money to get what they want.

The geeks on the other hand excel in academics and are more interested in SAT scores, chess club, Dungeons & Dragons – and yes, tracking monkeys with lasers – than in shopping, decorating and social scenes. Most of them have never kissed a girl, let alone gone out clubbing.

“I’ve never really gone out and partied,” Tyson said. His claim to fame is the fact that he can solve the Rubic’s Cube in a world record time of less than 13 seconds.

This is one that even The Man on the Couch wanted to see more of. Although I’m not sure if he actually liked the show or just wanted to see more of Sarah, whom he grew quite fond of in the first episode.

Either way, tune in for the beauties – one is from Maine – or to see if the geeks can transform themselves into socially acceptable studs, and I guarantee you’ll be back for another episode.
