Seniors behind wheel

Again your editorial (BDN, Dec. 28) speaks of senior citizens behind the wheel.

I am one of the seniors who drives. I am 82 years ago and have a good driving record.

The last accident I was involved in was in 1997. A young girl passed me on the right, in a non-passing area and against my right directional signal. She admitted that in court, under oath. The court allowed that there was no proof she violated the law.

I believe the police officer chose to charge me with the accident because of my age. The damage to her car showed I tried to avoid the accident. Her car’s damage was confined mostly to the doors on the driver’s side.

If I had turned into her car it would have removed the rear fender – that didn’t happen.

Now the state says seniors should take driving courses. I believe the state should give police officers more training in accident investigations.

Police officers should not automatically charge seniors with accidents because of their age.

Being a senior I realize my reactions may have slowed, so I plan ahead. And then some youngsters think we should be put off the road, and they get impatient with us.

Please print our side of the story.
