I was appalled, but not surprised, that the state of diabetes in Maine has doubled since 1994. I have recently retired from active nursing after 41 years and have seen the increase and complications of this in my years as an ER nurse.
When I went to nursing school in the 1960s, I had a diet therapy instructor who said that most disease conditions were caused by improper nutrition and diet. Myself and my classmates just brushed her off as fanatical. At our last class reunion we discussed how right she was.
A doctor once told me that I had to take charge of my own health. How right he was.
It takes discipline to maintain a well-balanced diet and exercise plan. How rewarding it is. There are no pills or doctors who can make you well unless you follow this advice and be compliant with the medical plan.
Fortunately, I enjoy good health and am very active physically. I have no heartburn, skin problems, sleep problems, cholesterol or vascular problems. I eat well, but in moderation, and I walk four miles a day.
Wake up, America and Maine! Follow the nutritional pyramid. Guide your children to healthy eating habits and activities that promote good health. You need to take charge now of your destiny.
We have two wonderful people who can help with getting a proper diet and nutrition. I’ve read their columns, and they are also very concerned with the poor nutrition and obesity in Maine. They are Dr. Daniel Nadeau and Katherine Musgrave who are connected with the diabetes clinic at Eastern Maine Healthcare.
