Another in a seemingly endless line of political action committees has been created to attack Gov. Baldacci and, in this case, Dirigo Health. Strangely, the directors of the PAC are the four Republican leaders of the Legislature.
According to the Portland Press Herald, the money for the PAC comes from “a variety of sources,” including individuals “who are involved in the insurance industry.” How interesting.
The goal of the attacks is to convince people the relatively new Dirigo Health effort isn’t working, won’t work, and it is all the governor’s fault.
So, why is Dirigo such a threat to the insurance industry? Aren’t they making enough money? They don’t like a governor who is actually doing something about health care costs? Should we go back to what we had, because what we had were more uninsured Mainers and when an uninsured person has to have health care to survive, everyone pays.
I appreciate a governor who is willing to take the health care issue head on and do something. Dirigo is our state motto which I believe means “to lead.” Is Dirigo perfect? No, but it’s a start. Let’s build it and make it available for more Mainers.
