Man gets prison term for hospital break-in

BANGOR – A Brewer man with a history of drug abuse was sentenced Thursday in Penobscot County Superior Court to four years in prison for breaking into an office at a local hospital.

Cory L. Fling, 30, pleaded guilty in September to two counts of burglary, two counts of forgery and one count of criminal trespass.

Fling, who has a lengthy criminal history, asked to be admitted to a drug rehabilitation program before he began his incarceration.

Maine Superior Court Justice Jeffrey Hjelm rejected that request.

“Actions speak louder than words,” he said Thursday. “You have had two opportunities at probation that were unsuccessful in spite of significant time hanging over your head. … You’ve had the tools to come to grips with your addiction, but that hasn’t worked out.”

Fling quietly wept as the judge imposed the sentence.

Greg Campbell, Penobscot County assistant district attorney, urged Hjelm to sentence Fling to six years, the maximum allowed under his plea agreement with prosecutors.

On Nov. 8, 2004, Fling broke into on office at Acadia Hospital in Bangor and stole a prescription pad. He forged two prescriptions for drugs before he was apprehended after breaking into the home of a former teacher in Millinocket.

Fling has been jailed since July, when his bail was revoked after he was found trespassing on the porch of another Millinocket residence.

A little more than three years ago, Fling was sentenced to two years and eight months in prison for breaking into a Brewer ambulance in search of drugs earlier that year while on probation and enrolled in a home release program.
