BANGOR – Describing its organization as the state’s “leading environmental voice,” the Natural Resources Council of Maine has scheduled public presentations in Portland, Brunswick, Belfast and Camden to oppose Plum Creek Timber Co.’s development proposal for the Moosehead Lake region.
The company wants to develop, over time, three campgrounds, about 1,000 residential lots, sporting camps and a resort on about 9,000 acres in unorganized territory near Greenville.
To mitigate the development, the Seattle-based company has said it would place more than 400,000 acres of forestland in the area in conservation for 30 years.
But in a press release this week, the NRCM calls the development a “big moosetake” and announces a schedule of meetings for later this month to voice its concerns and seek support for its position.
Meetings will be held in:
. Portland – 6:30-7:30 p.m. Jan. 19 at Nomads.
. Brunswick – 6:30-8 p.m. Jan. 23 at the Curtis Memorial Library.
. Belfast – noon-1 p.m. Jan. 31 at the University of Maine Hutchinson Center.
. Camden – 6:30-8 p.m. at the Camden Library.
