A Bangor man was arrested early Sunday morning and charged with a drug offense.
Bangor police Officers Jason Stuart and Brandon Vafiades of the Bangor Police Department responded to a call placed at 3 a.m. from a Bangor woman who said her car had been hot-wired and stolen. She claimed the suspects were armed and in possession of drugs. Stuart and Vafiades located the vehicle on Center Street, with both suspects asleep in the car.
Stuart shined his flashlight into the vehicle and asked the two people inside to show him their hands. They were later identified as Steven Pelkey, 28, and Meisha Rice, 23, both of Bangor. Pelkey then allegedly gave Stuart a folding knife. Vafiades took Pelkey aside and searched him, and reported that he found on him a Tic Tac container that had crack cocaine in it, as well as steel wool, a small torch, a piece of a metal clothes hanger, twist ties and 13 sandwich bags.
Stuart spoke with Rice, who said she had no weapons or drugs on her. Stuart placed her into handcuffs and patted her down. He said he found a small baggie with what he identified as cocaine in it, as well as steel wool and a small vial with a white powdery substance in it. According to Stuart, Rice repeatedly stated that the jacket did not belong to her, and that she had borrowed it from a friend and did not know whom the items found belonged to. Stuart issued a summons to Rice for unlawful possession of scheduled drugs.
Stuart transported Pelkey to the Bangor police station, and reportedly asked him if he had anything else on him. Pelkey admitted he did, and pulled out what Stuart said looked like a traveler’s toothpick.
Pelkey allegedly said, “To be honest, it has a hit of rock in it,” and pulled the cap off it and revealed what looked like a small piece of crack cocaine. Pelkey was charged with trafficking in scheduled drugs and was transported to the Penobscot County Jail.
A Bangor man who had burglarized a Brewer redemption center two nights in a row was caught early Sunday morning on his third attempt to steal bottles and cans, police said.
Officer Ed Willey of the Brewer Police Department spotted Daniel Frey, 29, of Bangor walking through the parking lot of the redemption center on South Main Street at around 1:38 a.m. Sunday, police said. Willey had heard about the burglaries that took place the two previous nights, so he stopped Frey to talk to him. The officer observed the handles of bolt cutters sticking out of Frey’s jacket, police said.
Willey called for backup, and Cpl. David Lord arrived on the scene. Lord and Willey then spoke with another person who was waiting in Frey’s truck, which was parked at a gas station across the street. Frey reportedly admitted at that point to burglarizing the business the two previous nights, and that he had planned to steal bottles and cans again that night.
Frey was charged with two counts of burglary, two counts of theft, two counts of criminal mischief, with possession of burglar’s tools, and with violating his probation. No charges were filed against the driver of the truck. Frey was transported to the Penobscot County Jail.
An accident in front of Hollywood Slots on Main Street in Bangor resulted in major damage to both vehicles involved.
According to Officer James Deering of the Bangor Police Department, at around 5:42 p.m. Saturday a white Oldsmobile driven by David Kelley, 71, of Hermon attempted to make a left turn into the Hollywood Slots parking lot. Kelley could not complete the turn because of oncoming traffic from the parking lot, and stopped with the rear end of his vehicle blocking the right lane of traffic.
At this point an Isuzu sport utility vehicle driven by Cheryl Nason, 44, of Hampden struck the rear of the Oldsmobile. Nason was driving at a “high rate of speed,” police said, and apparently skidded for 95 feet before crashing into Kelley’s car.
The passenger in the Oldsmobile, Marguerite Kelley, also of Hermon, complained of pain caused by bumping her head on the dashboard, but she did not request medical attention.
Each vehicle had about $2,000 in damage, police said. No charges were filed.
