LEWISTON – Sophomore forward Matia Kostakis went 13-for-14 at the foul line en route to a team-high 21 points to lead the Bates College Bobcats to a 56-51 upset of the Bowdoin College Polar Bears in women’s basketball action Friday night.
Bowdoin was ranked second in the most recent NCAA Division III USA Today poll.
Bates’ win ended a 31-game New England Small College Athletic Conference win streak by the Polar Bears while extending its own home unbeaten streak to 16 games.
Bates hit 18 of 21 free throws while 11-2 Bowdoin hit only seven of 16.
Eileen Flaherty led Bowdoin with 24 points and surpassed the 1,000-point mark for her career.

At Orono, the Black Bears scored three power-play goals in the third period en route to the tie with the No. 1-ranked Wildcats.
UNH’s Shannon Clement had to score with 1:15 remaining to salvage the tie.
Patricia Gagnon, playing her first game for the Bears, knotted the score at 1 with her first goal, then earned her first assist when Sonia Corriveau scored to tie the game at 2-2.
With UNH leading 4-2 in the third period, power-play goals by Brigitte Laflamme, Gagnon, and Vanessa Vani gave the Bears a 5-4 lead for 36 seconds.
Kelly Law had two assists, and Genevieve Turgeon recorded 29 saves on 34 shots for Maine, which is now 10-4-5 (2-4-3 in Hockey East).
Clement scored three times for the Wildcats (16-2-1, 7-1-1), and Leah Craig and Jenniger Hitchcock had the other two goals. Melissa Bourdon made 20 saves on 25 shots.
The two teams meet again today at 3 p.m.
