Libbey, 10 others to join Maine Baseball Hall

PORTLAND – The Maine Baseball Hall of Fame will see its membership ranks swell by 11 this summer at the annual induction ceremonies July 23.

Former Bangor High School and University of Maine shortstop Dennis Libbey, already one of only 17 members of the Black Bears All-Time Hall of Fame, heads a list of distinguished inductees who will be honored at the Holiday Inn by the Bay.

Locals joining Libbey are Farmington’s Galen Sayward, who had a distinguished career with the semipro Farmington Flyers in the Pine Tree League and organized the first Babe Ruth League in Farmington; Vassalboro’s John “Tardy” Burns, a left-handed pitcher for the semipro Augusta Millionaires in the 1950’s and a Milwaukee Braves minor league farmhand; and Wilton’s Roy “Joe” Dyke, a perennial Pine Tree League and Timber League all-star second baseman who also played in the National Amateur Baseball Tournament in 1948.

The rest of the inductee field includes Portland natives Ron Farr, who has coached for 40 years in the Portland North Little League and is the 2006 Maine Baseball Hall of Fame’s President’s Award winner, and Peter “Buster” Pompeo, who has umpired at all levels in Maine for 32 years; South Portland’s Alan Livingston, a three-year starter at second base for Jack Butterfield’s 1970’s UMaine teams and the Portland Twilight League’s president/commissioner; Westbrook Little League All-Star coach Rick Knight, who guided his team to state and regional titles as well as a fifth-place finish in the Little League World Series last year; Westbrook’s Bob MacHardy, who led Westbrook to a state title in 1951 before going on to Rollins College and becoming a Small College All-American; Windham’s Steve Merrill, an outstanding pitcher at Deering High and the University of Massachusetts who also coached Yarmouth High School to three Class C state titles in the 1990’s; and Cape Elizabeth’s Bruce Glazier, the sports director at Portland TV station WCSH since 1979 and Maine’s sportscaster of the year in 1985.

Tickets for the event can be obtained from Sonny Noel by calling 428-3678.
