UNITY – Unity College has named a veteran environmental studies educator as its president.
Mitchell Thomashow is a professor at Antioch New England Graduate School in Keene, N.H.
He also serves as associate dean for institutional advancement, a job that usually involves fundraising.
Thomashow succeeds David Glenn-Lewin, who resigned last year to return to teaching.
Interim President Mark Lapping will continue into summer, the college announced Friday, and Thomashow will begin July 15.
In announcing Thomashow’s selection, Unity described him as “a scholar and writer who is specifically interested in developing reflective, interdisciplinary pedagogy for undergraduate and graduate programs in environmental studies.”
He earned a Bachelor of Arts in urban problems from New York University, a master’s degree in history from State University of New York at Stony Brook, a Master of Science in teaching environmental studies from Antioch and a doctorate in education from the University of Massachusetts.
His most recent book is “Bringing the Biosphere Home,” a guide for learning how to perceive global environmental change.
Unity is a private liberal arts college in Waldo County that provides a liberal arts education emphasizing the environment and natural resources. It has about 500 students.
