Soucy lifts Broncos to win Hampden, Brewer, Foxcroft notch hockey victories

BREWER – Matt Soucy scored a goal and notched an assist to lead the Hampden Academy Broncos to a 4-2 high school ice hockey win over the Stearns Minutemen at T.J. Ryan Center Saturday.

Ian Lee, Sam McNutt and Kathleen Macone each netted a goal. Ryan Richards and Camden Murray combined for 16 saves on 18 shots for the 5-5 Broncos.

Derek McGillicuddy and Nate Cyr each scored for Stearns. Paul Rucci made 33 saves on 37 shots for the 0-6 Minutemen of Millinocket.

Brewer 2, Presque Isle 0

At T.J. Ryan Center in Brewer, Prentiss Swett’s goal off an assist from Zach Wilson with 3:09 left in the game broke a scoreless tie and sent the Witches on to victory.

The other goal for the 9-1 Witches came on an empty-netter by Dylan Fitzpatrick in the final seconds. Ben Caldwell was credited with the assist. Jim Nicknair notched his first shutout this season by saving all nine shots he faced.

For the 4-5 Wildcats, Brendon Esquibel made 31 saves on 32 shots.

Cheverus 4, Bangor 3

At Portland Ice Arena, Sam Johnson and Jon Anton each scored a goal and assisted another to help lead Cheverus to the win.

Mike Antoniou and Alex Arthur both scored a first-period goal for 8-2 Cheverus and Geno Dimillo had two assists. Casey Cox made 18 saves on 21 shots.

Dan Shufelt scored two goals for 3-6 Bangor and Matt Boehmer scored a goal. Ben Silver, Ben Estabrook and Joel Whitney each had an assist. Andrew Riley stopped 20 of 24 shots.

Win-Dale 4, John Bapst 3

At Sawyer Arena in Bangor, Mike Fleishman and Russ Schmelzer both scored a goal and had an assist to help lead Win-Dale (Winthrop, Hall-Dale) past John Bapst.

Dan Garland and Seth Kimball both scored a goal for 4-3 Win-Dale. Ray Linck, Mike St. Pierre, David Richer, and Sam Frost each had an assist. Tavis Hasenfus made 22 saves on 25 shots.

Brian Leighton scored two goals and assisted the other for the 3-4 Crusaders. Travis Poulin had a goal and Josh Hunnefeld had an assist. Nate Kuneman and Doug Dieuveuil combined to stop 14 of 18 shots.

Foxcroft 6, Maranacook 1

At Sawyer Arena in Bangor, Durgin McKusick scored one goal and assisted on two others to pace the Ponies past the Black Bears of Readfield.

Adam Conway, Bill Moriarty, David White, Logan Forrest, and Brad Bellmare also scored for Foxcroft Academy.

Jon Cattell made 27 saves on 28 shots for FA.

Mike Brennan tallied for the Bears, and Kyle Vorpagel made 50 saves on 56 shots.

At Lee, Peter Pickering’s 3-pointer with 16.1 seconds left forced overtime, and the Pandas then limited Washington Academy of East Machias to two points in the extra session to earn the victory.

Tom Bird led Lee with 22 points, including a 12-of-14 effort from the free-throw line. Pickering finished with 14 points and six assists for the Pandas, who trailed by as many as 10 points in the third quarter.

Kris King added 12 points and 10 rebounds for Lee.

Mike Von Rotz scored 15 points for WA, while Jarred Sternbergh had 14 points and 12 rebounds, Corey Colbeth scored 13 points and Eric Leighton added 11.
