Bangor police investigate Elks Club burglary

Bangor police are investigating a burglary reportedly committed early Tuesday morning in which someone made off with a few thousand dollars in cash from the Elks Club on Odlin Road.

Detective Sgt. Paul Kenison said officers were called by a passer-by around 3:30 a.m. Tuesday, but when police arrived, no one was there. However, “There was an extensive amount of damage in the place,” he said.

Kenison did not say whether there was one or many suspects, but whoever was inside spent some time there. “They entered every door and cabinet they could get into,” he said.

The Elks Club is not equipped with an alarm system, Kenison said.

The sergeant said the case is still under investigation, but he estimated that about $3,000 was taken from the club. Police did not have any strong leads as of Wednesday afternoon.

A Bangor woman told police early Wednesday morning that her husband of two years had threatened to bash her face in after an argument they had.

The woman said she was trying to get her husband to go to bed but that he continued to play video games. When she confronted him again at 3 a.m., he became agitated, she told Bangor police Officer Eric Tourtelotte.

She said she knew what was coming next and got her pepper spray and stood in the doorway. Her husband, Bernard Kellish, 42, told her to back off or “I will bash your face in,” the police report stated. The woman cowered in fear, but managed to sneak away and call police on a cell phone. Tourtelotte arrested Kellish on a charge of criminal threatening.

A broken cell phone was the least of a Bangor man’s problems early Wednesday morning.

Bangor police Officer Michael Jewett was driving on Franklin Street at 1:25 a.m. when he saw a man, identified as Jeremy Clarke, 23, standing in the middle of the street, according to the police report. He advised Clarke to move onto the sidewalk for his own safety. Clarke did not move and swore at the officer, Jewett reported. Another man approached Jewett saying that he had called a cab and was going to take Clarke home. Jewett said that it was obvious Clarke was intoxicated.

Returning to the Bangor Police Department, Jewett still could hear Clarke yelling down the road. He returned to Franklin Street and told Clarke to quiet down. Clarke took off his jacket and threw it on the ground, damaging his cell phone in the pocket, and continued yelling.

Jewett then placed Clarke under arrest for disorderly conduct.

A Hampden man who lost control of his car early Wednesday morning and crashed into a ditch was intoxicated, according to the police officer who ended up arresting the motorist.

Authorities were called to the Odlin Road near the Hermon town line about 1:30 a.m. and found a dark-colored Saab severely damaged in the left-side ditch.

Officers arriving on the scene suspected that the motorist had been drinking, but the driver, Justin Perry, 27, initially said he had had one beer. Another motorist stopped and told police he had seen Perry drinking at a bar and that Perry had had more than one drink.

Tourtelotte arrested Perry after the Hampden man performed field sobriety tests. At the Bangor Police Station, Perry’s blood alcohol content registered 0.24 percent, or three times the legal limit of 0.08 percent.
