Free hunting, fishing licenses open to vets

AUGUSTA – The Maine National Guard is offering free hunting and fishing licenses to combat veterans who have served overseas under a new state program.

Guard members who have served for at least three months continuously in Operation Iraqi Freedom or Operation Enduring Freedom since Oct. 1, 2001, are eligible. The program also is open to active and reserve members.

To qualify, applicants also must:

. Be a Maine resident.

. Have received an honorable discharge if no longer serving.

. Have proof of a previous hunting license or valid hunter safety course.

The licenses are available at military facilities and units in Bangor, Augusta, Gardiner, Caribou and South Portland, as well as through the Bureau of Maine Veterans Services, which has locations throughout the state.
