Cabin Fever Reliever highlights weekend activities

Outdoors enthusiasts looking for a weekend full of fun may want to consider checking out the Cabin Fever Reliever in Old Town next weekend.

The show, which is hosted by the Old Town YMCA and sponsored by the Penobscot Fly Fishers and Old Town Canoe, offers a variety of activities, booths, speakers, and demonstrations.

In addition, Old Town Canoe will hold its annual sale on overstocked, discontinued, and slightly blemished canoes and kayaks.

There will be plenty of fly-tiers on hand to teach interested folks new patterns and techniques, and exhibitors will talk about everything from climbing, bowhunting, and paddling to dog training and decoy carving.

Fly casting, boating safety, turkey calling, and GPS use are among the many topics to be covered by an experienced slate of speakers.

The show runs from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Jan. 28 and from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Jan. 29.

Derby season upon us

Ice anglers looking for some friendly competition will be meeting up on lakes across the state over the coming weeks.

Here is a partial list of ice fishing derbies that have received permits from the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife:

. In Liberty, The Walker School PTC will hold a derby on Lake St. George on Sunday. The weigh-in will be at the town park.

. In St. Agatha, the Black Bear Rod and Gun Club and the town of St. Agatha will host a derby on Long Lake today and Sunday. The weigh-in takes place at the Long Lake Sporting Club in Sinclair.

. In Damariscotta, the Samoset Fish and Game Club will hold a derby on Jan. 28-29 covering all legal waters in the state. The weigh-in is at the American Legion hall in Damariscotta.

. In Danforth, the East Grand Snowmobile Club will hold a derby on Jan. 28-29 on East Grand, Deering, Brackett, and North lakes. The weigh-in will take place at Butterfield Landing in Weston, Greenland Cove Camps in Danforth, and Hideaway Lodge on North Lake.

. In China, the St. John Regional Catholic School will hold a derby on Jan. 29, covering all legal waters in the state. The weigh-in is at 15 South Garand Street in Winslow.

. In Jackman, Forest Hills High’s Close Up program will hold a derby on Feb. 4-5 on big Wood Pond. The weigh-in will be held at the boat landing.

. In Hudson, the Pushaw Lake Snowmobile Club is holding a derby on Feb. 4-5 at Pushaw Lake. The weigh-in is at the snowmobile clubhouse on Whitmore Landing Road. A special $75 bounty will be paid to the angler who catches the biggest pike.

. In Hancock County, the Acadian American Legion will hold a derby on Feb. 5 on all legal waters in the county. The weigh-in is at the Hancock Memorial Post.

Massachusetts show on tap

Fly fishers have been known to drop everything on a whim and drive for miles for the opportunity to try out a new fishing spot.

If you’re one of those enthusiasts, and you feel like taking a long weekend drive, you may want to head to Marlborough, Mass., this weekend for The Fly Fishing Show.

One of 11 shows scheduled across the nation this year, the Marlborough show promises to have something for every fly fisher and tier.

The show runs from 9 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. today and 9-4:30 on Sunday. It’s being held at the Royal Plaza Trade Center.

The show features celebrities of the fly fishing world, authors, tiers, and plenty of exhibitors, programs, and classes.
