Religion in brief DEXTER: TAKING THE HIGH ROAD

The Rev. Will Walters is ready for a challenge. The pastor of the First Free Baptist Church, 130 Spring St., has initiated an Adopt-A-Highway program. His congregation will serve as caregiver for the town’s “trashiest” route. Members will collect and remove garbage from the ditches of Route 7 north and southbound from Route 94 to the Dexter Motor Lodge. It is the same route used to reach the town’s transfer station. About a dozen or so church members, as well as people who have been ordered to do community restitution, will help clean the roadsides, according to Walters. Supplies, such as safety vests, garbage bags and an Adopt-A-Highway sign, will be funded by the church, he said. “The church should be more involved in the community and become more proactive rather than just a holy huddle on Sundays,” Walters said.
