Art Jette submitted his resignation as Garland’s school board representative effective at the March annual town meeting. Jette has served on the board for 10 years, and his term does not expire until March 2007. In a recent letter to selectmen, Jette noted several reasons for wanting to leave his post, including leadership changes. He also said he was bothered that the board has no apparent interest in including the public in its deliberations concerning proposed school closings in Garland and Exeter, a move planned with the construction of a new elementary-middle school. In his letter, Jette also faulted the work done last summer on the paving, parking and drainage project at Dexter Regional High School. “The citizens and taxpayers of the district deserved better than what they got [for their $400,000 investment],” he wrote. Jette also noted that he was concerned by the expansion of what were once seasonal activities to year-round athletic competitions, taking away from students’ opportunities for a variety of experiences. SAD 46 Superintendent Kevin Jordan declined on Monday to comment on Jette’s resignation.
