The University of Maine men’s hockey team has added some size up front for next season.
David deKastrozza, a 6-foot-4, 205-pound native of Toms River, N.J., who can play both center and wing, has verbally committed to attend Maine in the fall, according to Culver Military Academy (Ind.) coach Al Clark.
The 19-year-old deKastrozza was the Eagles’ leading goal scorer a year ago with 29 in 44 games. His 43 points tied him for the team lead and his 12 power-play goals were tops.
So far this season, deKastrozza has eight goals and six assists through 28 games. He has four PPGs and three game-winners.
Clark said deKastrozza has been “snakebitten” this season and is a “much better offensive player than he has shown this year in terms of his numbers.
“He is a big, strong kid with excellent skills,” said Clark, who played his college hockey at the University of New Hampshire. “He can skate, he handles the puck well and he has a real nice release on his shot. He’s very good on faceoffs. He’s aggressive. You’ll notice him when he’s on the ice. He has a good up-side.”
Clark predicted that deKastrozza, who was also heavily recruited by Army, will fit in nicely at Maine.
“He can do an awful lot of things pretty well. I’m guessing they won’t ask him to be a top offensive player his first year. He’ll fit whatever role they have for him quite nicely. He’s a good physical presence and a good strong defensive player. He’ll chip in here and there offensively in his first year and evolve from there,” said Clark.
DeKastrozza’s coming to Maine is dependent upon his admission to the institution and meeting NCAA Clearinghouse standards.
