DOVER-FOXCROFT – A Medway man died Tuesday morning after he fell about 20 feet in an elevator shaft at Brown’s Mills.

Harold Gerry, 73, had been helping a local thrift shop move donated clothing that was stored at Brown’s Mills to a facility when the accident occurred.

Gerry had opened the doors of an elevator about 9:20 a.m., looking for some type of dolly to use, stepped inside the dark space and fell about 15 to 20 feet before he landed on top of the elevator, Police Chief Dennis Dyer said Tuesday.

Mayo Regional Hospital ambulance personnel, Dover-Foxcroft firefighters and Dover-Foxcroft police responded.

Gerry was taken by ambulance to Mayo, then flown to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. He died later at the Bangor hospital, according to Dyer.

Gerry had been staying with a relative in Milo.
