SOUTH PARIS – Jurors in the trial of a Portland man accused of attacking a doctor at her Fryeburg home deliberated for several hours Wednesday before being sent home. Jurors were to reconvene on Thursday.
Donald Mair, 31, was charged with attempted murder following the attack on Dr. Mary Nash, who interrupted him during a burglary, prosecutors said.
Testifying in his own defense, Mair, a Fryeburg native, told jurors on Tuesday that he had returned to his hometown in September 2004 when Nash was attacked, but insisted he had nothing to do with the brutal assault.
“I did not do this crime,” Mair testified.
Nash, who is in her 60s, identified Mair as her attacker. She said Monday that when she tried to phone police, Mair hit her several times, apparently with a flashlight, his hands and a wrench. He also pulled out a dagger and threatened to kill her, she said.
Nash, who escaped to a neighbor’s house, suffered a broken nose, two shattered fingers and cuts and bruises.
Mair, who is being held at the Oxford County Jail, was arrested last May and charged with attempted murder, elevated aggravated assault, burglary and aggravated assault.
