STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Stony Brook University took a 14-point halftime lead and never looked back in ending a seven-game losing streak to the University of Maine with a 65-49 America East women’s basketball victory over the Black Bears on Wednesday night at the Indoor Sports Complex.
The loss drops Maine to 6-11 overall, 2-4 in conference play, while suffering its seventh straight road loss. Stony Brook is 11-6, 4-2 in America East.
Mykeema Ford led the Seawolves with game-high totals of 16 points and five assists, while Jessie Boylan scored 12 points and Jessica Smith pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds. Kelly Watson added nine points off the Stony Brook bench courtesy of 3-for-4 shooting from beyond the 3-point arc.
“We played well at times, but we tended to get complacent once we had a big lead,” said Stony Brook coach Maura McHugh. “We are happy with the win overall, but we need to get better at putting our opponents away.”
Maine held a 9-7 lead with 15:31 left in the first half, but Stony Brook began to pull away late in the period, using a 10-2 run sparked by two baskets from Morgan Patrick to take a 34-20 lead at intermission.
Boylan hit a pair of 3-pointers and made three straight free throws to fuel a 12-1 Stony Brook run that gave the Seawolves a 46-21 lead less than four minutes into the second half.
That lead would grow to as much as 28 points with 13:42 left in the game, and Maine got no closer than 16 points the rest of the way.
Bracey Barker led Maine with 15 points, while Brittany Bowen added a career-high 10 points. Abby Schrader led the Black Bears with nine rebounds.
UMaine guard Ashley Underwood, who suffered a high left ankle sprain Saturday during the Black Bears’ 73-56 victory over Maryland-Baltimore County, returned to action against Stony Brook but went scoreless on 0-for-5 shooting in 16 minutes of action.
The Black Bears return to action at noon Sunday at Boston University.
