Tanguay lands role in independent film

Rumford native and University of Maine alumnus Gary Tanguay wants to give someone their big break in the movie biz.

The former radio and TV broadcaster for WABI in Bangor has landed a role in a locally produced independent film titled “Stiffs” as a reporter chasing down the story of some missing mobsters.

The 41-year-old Tanguay came up with the idea to auction off an extra role in the film to benefit the Salvation Army’s Good Neighbor Fund, which provides assistance to people who are having difficulty paying home heating costs.

Tanguay, co-host of Fox Sports Net’s New England Sports Tonight and studio host for FSNNE Boston Celtics telecasts, plays TV reporter Mike Roberts in the black comedy starring Danny Aiello and Lesley Ann Warren.

The extra role has yet to be determined, but the auction winner will also get: to meet and greet the actors and actresses, a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the movie, two FSNNE luxury box tickets to an upcoming Celtics game, and a behind-the-scenes tour of a FSNNE Celtics telecast.

People can bid in the auction online by going to www.magoodneighbor.org, clicking on the Stiffs Roll Click Auction link, and providing a bid along with contact information. The winner must be available for one day (a date to be determined) between Feb. 2 and Feb. 13, excluding weekends. The opening bid was set at $500 Wednesday night and bidding will continue through Feb. 1 at 5 p.m.

The benefit auction was made possible through Tanguay by director Frank Ciota and his brother, screenwriter Joe Ciota. The film will be shot exclusively in Massachusetts.

ABC wearing the green

Sunday afternoon’s NBA game between the Boston Celtics and Milwaukee Bucks at Milwaukee has been blacked out on Fox Sports Net New England because of network exclusivity broadcast rules. The game is scheduled to be aired by ABC at 3:30 p.m., giving the Celtics a rare national telecast. FSNNE is schedule to air the remainder of the Celtics’ games this season.

High definition hardwood

Good news sports fans and techno-junkies: Fox Sports Net New England is giving you another reason to justify that $2,000 television set. FSNNE has joined the high definition revolution by broadcasting 21 of the final 39 games in its Boston Celtics telecast schedule in HDTV.

HDTV features highly detailed picture quality with images up to six times sharper than analog TV, a wide-screen picture with a width-height ratio identical to that of most cinema screens, more than two million pixels per picture and CD-quality surround sound.

Adelphia Cable added FSNNE Celtics HDTV telecasts Monday with the airing of the Celtics-Los Angeles Lakers game on channel 779.

Most of the broadcasts are Celtics home games, but three road games – Feb. 6 at Miami, 21 at Utah, and 26 at Los Angeles – will also be aired as HDTV telecasts.

Maine focus of CSTV

If you don’t have a ticket next weekend, you can still see all the action from the University of Maine-University of New Hampshire hockey series at Alfond Arena in Orono.

Both of the Hockey East conference games will be televised.

College Sports TV (CSTV) – a national satellite network available on DISH Network, DirecTV and through live broadband streaming via a subscription through www.cstv.com – will air the Feb. 3 game live at 8 p.m.

Bangor station WABI (Channel 5) will air the Feb. 4 game live at 7 p.m.
