Town hall democracy

Late last December, Rep. Mike Michaud responded to repeated requests from his constituents and held a town hall meeting, in Bangor, on the war in Iraq. The forum provided an opportunity for those he represents in Washington to speak directly to him about the issues that concern them.

The evening was a powerful example of what participatory democracy can look like. Everyone was given the opportunity to speak, and the lone voice in support of the war who asked that Michaud “stay the course,” was listened to and given the same measure of respect as those that asked him to support and care for the troops by bringing them home or urged impeachment.

Throughout the meeting, Rep. Michaud listened intently, acknowledged the thoughtful comments of those who spoke, answered what questions he could and ended by committing to finding more time to continue the dialogue. He has now set the date for the next forum.

A second town hall meeting on the war in Iraq will take place at 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 29 at the Hutchinson Center Atrium in Belfast.

Rep. Michaud should be ap-plauded for his leadership among Maine’s congressional delegates made clear by his willingness to meet with and listen to the diverse, informed and articulate voices of the people of Maine.

This is what democracy should look like.
