UMaine-Fort Kent defeats UM-Machias for 9th win

FORT KENT – Edmundas Akstinas netted 16 of his 20 points in the second half as the UMaine-Fort Kent Bengals overcame a one-point halftime deficit en route to a 70-62 men’s basketball win over the UM-Machias Clippers Saturday.

Akstinas also grabbed eight rebounds.

Hamill Bassue had 14 points and eight rebounds, Rytis Kriunas had 14 points and four assists and Darius Parker contributed 10 points and six assists.

Jeremiah Johnson had 26 points for UM-Machias, Charles Calligan netted 13 more and David Douglas had nine rebounds.

At Chicopee, Mass., Sunday, senior center Buddy Leavitt pumped in a game-high 35 points, including six three-pointers, as Husson won the battle of the North Atlantic Conference unbeatens.

Husson is 8-0 in the NAC and 11-7 overall while Elms fell to 7-1 and 12-6, respectively.

Husson used a 20-6 run at the end of the first half to transform a seven-point deficit into a 48-41 lead it would never relinquish.

Leavitt also had five rebounds and two blocked shots.

Bangor’s Jordan Heath had 13 points and four assists; Bucksport’s Jason Harvey contributed 11 points, eight rebounds and six assists and Phil White chipped in 10 points and six rebounds.

The Eagles connected on 14 of their 30 3-point attempts.
