ORONO – Bangor High School junior left wing Matt Boehmer said head coach Ted Taylor and his coaches told him they expected him to step up and become a more prominent player this season.

He did just that Monday evening, notching his first hat trick in a Rams uniform as Class A Bangor topped Class B Orono 5-2 at Alfond Arena.

The bigger and stronger Rams improved to 6-6 with their third straight win over Eastern B championship contenders (Winslow, Brewer and Orono).

Orono fell to 10-3.

Ben Silver and Dan Shufelt had the other Ram goals and left wing Dylan George had three assists. Sophomore goalie Andrew Riley turned in an impressive 26-save performance.

Orono received both goals from junior center Kyle Weiland with linemate Sean Babin assisting on both. Goalie Keith Hedrick made 33 saves.

“Matt stepped up and Andrew Riley was huge,” said Taylor.

Boehmer said the team’s confidence has soared in the wake of Saturday’s 6-5 overtime win over Brewer in which the Rams erased a 5-0 deficit.

“We know we can win games,” said Boehmer.

Bangor never trailed as Silver (power play) and Boehmer scored 1:15 apart in the first period to open the scoring.

Weiland got one back with 13 seconds left in the period but Boehmer scored the only goal of the second period and he made it 4-1 on the power play 2:28 into the third.

Weiland answered at the 6:40 mark but Shufelt iced it with 2:45 left.

“We played a great first period, we were a little sloppy in the second period, but we got what we needed in the third period. We kept the pressure on,” said Taylor.

Orono coach Greg Hirsch said his team overcame a shaky first period to play better the rest of the way.

“Bangor’s defensemen did a great job in front of their net, tying up our sticks. And their goalie played well. He controlled his rebounds,” said Hirsch.

Orono junior left wing Tony Raymond added “Bangor used their size and speed to their advantage. They have a lot of size.”

Riley said he was pleased with the way he played other than leaving rebounds on the two goals.

Silver opened the scoring with a screened wrister from the left point off a George pass.

Boehmer made it 2-0 when he tucked home a Mike McPike rebound off a Ben Estabrook face-off win.

Weiland gave the speedy Riots life by tapping home a loose puck after Riley foiled Babin’s break-in.

Boehmer’s full-length dive produced the second-period goal after Silver’s point shot rolled into the crease.

“I dragged it in with my foot,” said Boehmer.

Boehmer made it 4-1 with a wrister from the top of the left circle that was misplayed by Hedrick and sailed past his glove.

Weiland capitalized on a third rebound but the Riots had a goal disallowed when the referees lost sight of the puck and Shufelt sewed it up when Hedrick dropped George’s chest-high slapper in his path.
