League eyeing Lewiston as indoor football site

LEWISTON – An arena football league says Lewiston has been preapproved as a site for a team when it begins play next year.

The Great Lakes Indoor Football League is interested in bringing the sport to the Colisee, the city-owned facility that hosts a successful semipro hockey team.

The league has franchises in Battle Creek, Mich.; Bethlehem, Pa.; Marion, Ohio; Port Huron, Mich., and Rochester, N.Y.

If Lewiston is to join the league, a team must be assembled and an owner or ownership group must be found.

“Lewiston supports other sports teams, and we know that with the proper owner and effort, that indoor football can be a huge success,” league co-founder Eric Spitaleri said in a news release.
