East Grand derby results in

Organizers of last weekend’s East Grand Lake Snowmobile Club derby say they enjoyed their second-largest turnout ever, and anglers succeeded in putting a few large lake trout on the ice.

The largest salmon, caught by Herbert Linscott, weighed 4 pounds, 5 ounces. Second-place salmon was a 2-pound, 14-ounce fish caught by Jamie Lambert.

In the lake trout category, Josh Barnes won with a fish that weighed 10 pounds, 3 ounces. Richard Dorr was second with a 9-pound, 3-ounce togue.

Ryan Fish caught the largest brook trout (2 pounds, 7 ounces), while Mark Thyng captured the cusk category with a 10-pounder.

Glen Martin won the pickerel division with a fish that weighed 3 pounds, 1 ounce, and Steven Bardeau’s 1-pound, 13-ounce whitefish was tops in its class. Robert Wellington caught the largest perch, a 1-pound, 10-ounce fish.

Ross Liberty and Kristina Kennedy won the boys and girls divisions, as each caught a salmon weighing 1 pound, 11 ounces.

The grand prize of $1,000, which was a raffle among all registrants, went to Leola Beach of Lambert Lake.

The Colonel’s Outdoor Tip

Each week Col. Tom Santaguida, the chief warden of the Maine Warden Service, offers an outdoor tip in the Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife’s outdoor report.

Here’s this week’s tip:

For those of you new to ice fishing – ever wonder how to set your ice fishing traps with the correct amount of line?

Once you measure out how deep you want to set your bait, attach an old plastic button to the line by sliding the line through the buttonholes before you tie on your hook. Then

after you catch a fish or re-bait, you simply reset your line to where the button is.

The button slides easily should you want to adjust bait depth.
